“Sometimes we are stuck with products and forced to make the best with them, and there are times when the results are about as good as we could have hoped for. An instance where this has happened to me, is with the refrigerator that came with the current apartment I am renting. When I moved in, they gave me The General Electric Hotpoint Top-Freezer Refrigerator. As refrigerators go, it is a pretty basic one, but it fulfills all of my needs, and does so in a clean convenient way. The refrigerator is an off-white color (if I had to guess I would say egg-shell, but what do I know), with the freezer built on top of it. It opens from left to right, and the handles of both units are large and very stable. Opening and closing doesn’t become an issue, because it never feels like the handle is going to come off in your hands. Along those lines, when closing the refrigerator and freezer the seal is very tight, and won’t just pop open if you have packed it too full. This often happens with my freezer in particular.
The entire unit measure out to 18.2 cubic feet of storage space for your foods and beverages. It is about 67 inches tall, and the depth is about 33 inches, with the width being 28 inches. It is relatively large, and serves its purpose quite well for someone living alone. I think it could be great for 2 to 3 people as well, but if it were for an apartment with 4 people in it, the size would quickly become an issue. As I said though, it suits me quite fine for the uses that I put it to. With the freezer you have a small shelf at the top which can hold ice trays, or ice cream bars if you have them. It is a pretty small shelf so you won’t be able to hold very much on it. Below it is plenty of space to store your TV dinners, frozen vegetables, and anything else you want to freeze. The door of the freezer has two open compartments with a bar in front of them, which can hold in some other items. This is where I put smaller things like microwave pizzas, drumsticks, and bottles of water that I want to freeze.
The refrigerator itself is set up with two shelves (you can get these in either glass or with open rungs) that are “runged” and can be adjusted up or down depending on how much space you want for each of the shelves. On the left and right insides of the refrigerator, there are six “bars” that the shelves can sit on. They are all spaced evenly, so that if you want to increase or decrease the height of a particular shelve, you can move the entire shelve up or down. It can be quite heavy with food on it though, so make sure you pop everything on to the counter before you make any adjustments. I take advantage of the bottom level of the refrigerator and use it as a third shelf to put heavier things like 12-packs of pop or left-over pizza that has been kept in the delivery box. It is important to make sure you can push the large pizza boxes to the back of the refrigerator though, because otherwise the door doesn’t end up closing as well as you might hope.
The door of the refrigerator has three shelves that are evenly spaced out, with a bar that adjusts to the biggest item you put in the door. Thus you can put smaller items in all of them, or pick and choose where you might want to put milk or orange juice containers. It is really up to you how you use the door, and you don’t have to worry about the items there being “less cool” then the rest of the refrigerator, because I think the coolness is evenly spread out for the whole area. In the top left of the door, you have your butter/batteries slot that has a flip down to door to protect it from the rest of the refrigerator. The door actually hinders me sometimes, because when it is closed, I forget what I have put in there, and end up opening more butter from the door, rather than finishing off the ones that were put away correctly. You could almost say that this is a great reason not to keep organized, because then you lose track of where you put anything of importance.
The last physical portion of the refrigerator, are the two drawers that are under the bottom “shelf” inside the refrigerator. These drawers slide out really easily, and are great to store fruits and vegetables in them. At times I have been known to keep extra cans of pop or bottles of water down in there, and it is another one of those things that falls to the discretion of the user of the appliance. The drawers help to protect these foods from being bruised or squished, and by having them separate from the rest of the refrigerated food, you can store more important ingredients in there with a clear mind about how they will last. The temperature controls for the refrigerator are at the front inside of the appliance, and I think that once you find the setting that you like, that you won’t have to change it for any future uses. I know that I have gone with the pre-settings, and I have never had good experiences without ever having food in the refrigerator freeze because they were too close to the freezer.
Despite all of the great features inside, one of the biggest selling points of this model (in my opinion) would have to be that it is energy efficient. The cost of my energy bill is always quite low, and with the water heater and other devices running along with the refrigerator, I am able to keep expenses down simply because all of these devices have been quite efficient since I moved in. If you break down energy into raw dollars (it uses around 480 kWh per year) you are talking about $40.00 per year according to the sheet that comes with the refrigerator. The unit also sells for around $500.00 at stores like Home Depot I have seen recently, but as I said, this model came with my apartment, so I didn’t end up buying my own. It is a great refrigerator in my opinion, and the only thing different I could possibly want in a model would be an ice maker. The General Electric Hotpoint is relatively quiet while it does its job, and everything keeps very cold after quickly getting to that state of being. Its adjustable shelves, wide open spaces for select foods, and minimal cost of operation are just a few of the highlights that I have found with this refrigerator. With the experience that I Have had with using it, I can easily recommend it highly to those in the market for a new refrigerator that will get the job done well. With over 2 years of use, I have never had to have any maintenance done on it, and that has just caused my opinion to become even more static over time.”
“overall this is a best buy for its class. its a no frills nice effiecient unit for a medium family. it gives a lot of room is relatively quiet and draws little electricity. ive sold about 200 of these and have yet to get one single complaint. its a nice first unit for a newly married couple to start. it can feed mom dad and two kids and can fit almost anywhere. the unit is layed out very nicely and can fit in a 28 inch wide space. sturdy construction, functional interior and nice contols make it a great choice. compared to its rivals from maytag, its cheaper and competes effectively. service from ge is competant and can be found online or by calling 1800gecares. ive found ge to be well stocked in parts should it need service. compared to lg its cheaper and more reliable. food stays fresh for a long time and its a best buy as far as i am concerned. a wiinner –every person i sold this too said they were very happy and planned to stick with ge…the closest next model up is almost two hundered bucks more and i would strongly advise this unit to anyone who wants a low cost nice unit”

“What impressed me most about this product was the low price for what you get. I have had my side by side for almost a year now and I totally love it. The glass shelves are sturdy and easy to clean and the storage bins have ample space. Plenty of room in the door for storage as well. The filtered water and ice is definitely a plus.”
“This model is comparable to all other mid-line side-by-sides, but much cheaper. The main feature is water/ice dispenser with light on freezer door. Ice options are cubes and crushed. Crushed ice is fast and restaurant quality. Water tastes great, like bottled (and I am very sensitive to water taste), but isn’t very cold. Ice tastes great also, as it is made from the same filtered water. Leaves no metallic or chlorine taste in drinks. Ice storage bin is huge. The shelves on both sides are easily (and independently) adjusted and sturdy once moved. Two sealed drawers are ample in size. Shelves on the door are wide enough for gallon jugs and soda bottles. Middle setting for each side is more than cold enough. Cheap price made this model preferable to others with the same features. Check measurements before ordering though. It’s on the large side.”
