“Needing a small refrigerator to hold our lunches and refreshments, we purchased the Danby DCR412W Miniature Refrigerator. The size was key, because it needed to fit nicely in the corner, or under a desk in order to be out of the way of normal “traffic.” This meant that we wanted something that was compact, but which would also provide the same high-quality amenities that a refrigerator of larger size would offer. This is a really simple appliance from first glance, standing at about 33 inches (just less than 3 feet) tall, and having an exterior color of white that encompasses all sides of the refrigerator. The front door opens from left to right, and reveals an interior that basically resembles any high-end fridge you might see, with the subtle difference being that this one is about 1/3 the size. This of course affects the amount of goods that you can store within the refrigerator, limiting the appliance to 4.3 cubit feet of total volume. It is a free-standing refrigerator, which probably weighs close to 50 pounds, and does not have wheels with which to move it. This means that as soon as you have found a place to put the refrigerator, which you aren’t going to want to move it anytime soon. If you do need to move it around, be very careful, because the contents will tend to shift around if there is any movement on the outside.

Inside the Danby, you see that there are two wire shelves that can be maneuvered on any of the 5 rungs that space out the different levels of the refrigerator. So, if you have something like a gallon of milk, you can space out the two shelves so that one is large enough to contain such a large grocery item. You can also use the bottom of the refrigerator as a third shelf, and that is normally used for items such as glass bottles or self-contained items in our examples. The other shelves end up with anything from milk, to sandwiches, to foiled wrapped slices of pizza. Really the world is your oyster in regards to what you place on these shelves, but keep in mind that the amount of storage space could become an issue if you are planning to have multiple uses for this one refrigerator. One other thing that may seem like an oddity, is that there are two smaller shelves at the far back of the refrigerator that allow you to store smaller items that you won’t need to retrieve for a while. The door has two separate compartments to the bottom right, consisting of an area to place items like 2-liter bottles, or cartons of orange juice and milk. It has a bar that holds the items in place, and folds down when there are no items to place in that slot. There is another smaller shelf above that, where you can put all of your condiments, and it is also self-contained. Beside those two shelves is what they call a “CanStor” dispenser, which allows you to place all of your aluminum-canned beverages in a fashion that leads to easy withdrawal. Finally there is the top shelf of the door where things such as eggs and butter can be placed for easy access.

The refrigerator also has a nice little freezer that is located above the top shelf, and which has a door that comes down to protect all of the food inside. Under that freezer is a tray that runs its length, and is designed to catch anything that might defrost and fall out of the freezer (liquids). This helps to protect all of the foods from anything coming out of the freezer, and is very easy to slide out when it is time to clean. Beside the front door of the freezer compartment, there is a red button, with a blue painted dial going around the outside of it. The button is intended to be an instant defrost when depressed, and the dial turns so that you can increase just how cold the freezer freezes. Unfortunately, the knob is only marked with a Zero at the top, and then no other indicators to allow you to know whether you are making the freezer either colder or warmer. We have it so that the dial is pointing straight down, and have had great results with the freezer doing exactly what it should be doing. In regards to the space that this freezer provides, through experience we know that it will hold 4 of the Lean Cuisine microwave meals at any time, with a little bit of space in the front and back left over, but not quite enough for another meal. I would say to just go with the knowledge that you can fit four of the frozen meals in the freezer before you run out of room.

The Danby DCR412 Compact Refrigerator fills its niche perfectly, and has performed perfectly ever since it was purchased some 6 to 8 months ago. The dimensions are about 33 inches in height, 21 inches deep, and it has a width of about 21 inches as well. The refrigerator isn’t designed to store enough food for a whole family, but is perfect if the intended use is for a residence hall room at college, for a small work office, or for a great stash to be kept in the bedroom or garage with only the necessities enclosed. This one is a relatively harmless white color, but they also sell them in black and stainless steel coloring if something else strikes your fancy. It sells for around $150 depending on where you purchase it, with this one being paid for at the Office Depot just down the street. For $150, I think it is really worth the cost, as it is intended to just be a place with quick access to chilled foods at all hours of the day. It is sold with a 1 year parts and labor warranty, and I doubt that you will have to “cash” that in if you take care, and clean frequently, your Danby refrigerator. If you are in the market for a compact fridge in either your home or office, I think that the Danby DCR412 is an excellent choice that is not only reliable, but holds a lot more food than you might think. This one gets a high recommendation, along with a 5-star rating for fulfilling all of my basic requirements that a refrigerator must adhere to. ”

“I just received my Danby DFF9102BLS yesterday. Overall, I love it. It takes a lot to impress me, but I’m genuinely surprised and pleased with the number of features the Danby folks thought to incorporate into such a small appliance.
The truth is, once you find yourself looking for a 24″ by 24″ refrigerator, you’re not going to find much of a selection. And once you start looking for a STAINLESS 24″ by 24″ refrigerator, the choices are even more limited.
The only other refrigerator I considered was the Summit FF1325SS — this is an interesting model because it is a full 70″ tall, which means you get full-sized fridge capacity packed into a 24″ space. In the end, I decided against that model only because I didn’t want to lose cabinet space above the fridge. But if you don’t care about cabinet space, you may want to consider the Summit model too – it’s a pretty cool design.
Freezer Storage:
Freezer ‘Main Cavity’ Space:
The freezer has a single adjustable wire shelf. It’s a nice feature that you can move this shelf among three different heights. I’ve had two different ‘compact’ refrigerators in the past — one had a fixed freezer shelf and the other had no shelf, so for me this is a big improvement. The shelf makes it a lot easier to organize your frozen foods and you don’t have to lift up the top items every time you need to get to the bottom items.
Freezer Door Space:
There are two shelves built into the freezer door (not adjustable). The bottom freezer door shelf is probably about the same height as you would find in a standard freezer, but the top one is definitely on the short side — only about enough height for a four-pack of Land ‘O Lakes butter or a pack of Ballpark Franks (lying on their sides – not up and down). Not a big deal – just want to point this out in case you’ve never had a small fridge so you have some idea about what really fits. (Most showrooms don’t show these smaller 24″ units. You have to order them on faith, so it’s good to have a sense about what to expect.)
One complaint about the freezer door shelves worth mentioning: in my opinion, they really should be a bit deeper. Obviously, this would take room away from the ‘cavity’ of the freezer, but in my mind that would be a worthwhile trade-off. I think freezer door shelves should be deep enough to hold a pint of Ben & Jerry’s! And these are not. So while I understand the height constraints, the depth constraints are entirely up to Danby and they missed the boat here. Even if you’re not a big ice cream fan, I think you’ll agree that deeper freezer door shelves would provide better ‘real size fridge’ functionality.
Ice Cube Tray:
O.k., I can’t help myself! I have to mention that the mini ice-cube tray Danby provides with this refrigerator is just plain silly. It makes a few teeny-tiny kid-sized cubes — probably just enough for one tall drink. Either Danby should give you a real ice-cube tray or just skip the whole thing. Just because you don’t have room for a regular fridge doesn’t mean you’re not a regular person who uses regular ice cubes! Anyhow, don’t let this stop you from buying the fridge, but do go out and buy yourself a normal ice cube tray!

Refrigerator Storage
The refrigerator storage is well-lit and easy to arrange. Danby provides four adjustable glass shelves and lots of height placement possibilities. I ended up only using three of the shelves provided, but it’s nice that if I want to re-arrange things down the line I’ll have an extra shelf.
As a side-note, I highly recommend that whether or not you buy this Danby fridge, you seek out a fridge with glass shelves as opposed to wire or plastic. I’ve had experience with all three shelf-types in the past. Plastic shelves tend to crack and wire shelves are really tough to clean. Glass shelves make it very easy to see things on lower shelves, they’re easy to clean, and in my opinion, they just look a whole lot nicer to boot.
A little troubling is the amount of space taken by the light bulb above the top shelf of this fridge. There is a large plastic frame around the bulb, ostensibly to protect it from being bumped, but the top-shelf is the shelf you use most often and to take up any amount of this ‘premium’ space with a light bulb protector makes me think someone wasn’t wearing a thinking cap the day it was designed.
Vegetable Drawer
The vegetable drawer in this fridge is fantastic – almost as much room as a vegetable drawer in a full-sized fridge. Very clever design. What Danby did is eliminate shelves opposite the vegetable drawer (i.e. in the fridge door) so that the vegetable drawer extends from the back of the fridge all the way forward to the front of the fridge. (i.e. when you close the fridge door, the vegetable door is flush with the inside of the lower portion of the fridge door.) It’s also GREAT that the vegetable drawer is clear and the shelf above is clear as well so you can see what vegetables you have without even opening the drawer.
Fridge Door Storage:
Danby gets high marks for a very thoughtful fridge door design. My favorite feature is the ‘CanStor’ unit which let’s you dispense your favorite regular-sized soda cans one-at-a-time right from the inside of the fridge door. Love it! Also clever is the lower fridge door storage shelf, which will hold three half gallons of orange juice lined up side-by-side, or, you can remove a plastic ‘spacer’ and suddenly this shelf accommodates a full gallon of milk and still has room for one half gallon of O.J. Pretty impressive.
The middle door compartment is perfect for storing butter and still has room to spare for cheese.
The egg compartment is the only door storage component that is a little disappointing. In just about every promotional photograph I’ve seen, it looks as though eggs will sit uniformly in the egg storage section of the fridge door. In reality, the ‘egg compartment’ is just a clear plastic box (no indentations for the eggs) and only about ten of my (large) eggs fit into the bottom of this box. There IS room for a dozen eggs, but they’re stacked up on top of one another. You can’t line them up the way they’re shown in photographs. (Maybe small eggs will line up that way?) Anyhow, again, the compartment will hold the eggs, just not as neatly as I would have liked. I assumed if the box did not have individual ‘indents’ for each egg, at least I would be able to fit the bottom of a 12-pack carton into the box. But it doesn’t fit. The good news is that the egg compartment IS the perfect depth/width to hold a pint of cream! So I’m keeping cream in the egg compartment along with a couple jars of jam and a jar of mustard. This is actually pretty handy, so in the end, I’m happy with it. But I do think the photos I have seen are a little misleading with regards to the reality of the egg storage provided”

“A few months ago the mini-refrigerator in our department at work conked out. After shopping around a bit a group of us decided to replace the old refrigerator with a Danby brand mini-refrigerator. So far this has been a great appliance!
Features:
The Danby mini-refrigerator model #DCR412 has 4.3 cubic feet of capacity. This is just enough room for 8 people to refrigerate soda cans, small snacks, and lunches. Some of the features are:
*A CanStor soda can unit, which hangs from the inside of the door and holds eight 12-ounce cans of soda.
*One full fixed shelf (on the bottom) and three half shelve racks that can be easily removed.
*A small freezer unit
*Enough room in the door rack for a 2 Liter soda bottles.
*A push-button defrost feature.
The overall dimensions are roughly 33” in height, 21” in width, and 22” in depth. A tag on the back of the unit says it weighs 68 pounds. This fits perfectly in the area we had available for it. One thing everyone likes about this refrigerator is how easy it is to clean. The small shelves (made of plastic-coated wiring) easily lift out, and their are a variety of slots on the sides that allow for adjusting the height of the shelves.
This Danby refrigerator’s exterior is black plastic with a stainless steel covering on the door. It is also available in a white exterior color. The handle is a molded piece of plastic integrated onto the top of the door, which opens easily. The door is hinged on the left side, but can be switched to the right side if necessary (we left it as it was). The interior is all white.
There are three shelves in the door: one short one across the top, one shelf about half way down, and another near the bottom. This is in addition to the CanStor rack for soda cans. Most people are storing bottled water, condiment bottles, and yogurt containers in the door racks.
There is a push-button defrosting feature for the freezer, which has a drip tray right beneath it. I haven’t yet defrosted it (not my turn yet!), but one other person has, and had no problems. I don’t know the dimensions of the freezer, but it’ll fit 2-3 frozen dinner boxes, and no more.
There is a temperature control dial knob right next to the freezer. This is the one oddity on this refrigerator: the knob has no marking except the number 0 on the top of the dial. We had to experiment a little to figure out which direction was warmer and which was colder. However, the temperature has remained steady ever since. I do not how much energy this unit consumes.
Warranty:
Danby offers a one-year warranty on labor and parts and five years on the major components.
Overall:
This Danby refrigerator model #DCR412 has worked out really well for us. It cost $118 on sale and we split the price eight ways, so it turned out to be a good price for each person. The 4.3 cubic feet is just the right size for a small department, college dorm, or recreation room refrigerator. The only drawback was the unmarked temperature control knob, but that’s pretty minor.
I had never heard of the name Danby before we started looking for mini-refrigerators. However, based on my experiences with this unit I am impressed with the quality of their products. Overall I rate the Danby model #DCR412 refrigerator as an excellent choice.”

“My sister gave us the Danby DCR34 Compact Refrigerator last July for our anniversary. She bought it for us to use outside on the back deck. It stops the family from coming inside to get a drink and in the process, leave a trail of sand and/or dirt on my clean floors. I was thinking we would use it only in the summer, when the family is outdoors most of the day, but we seem to use it nearly all year. It is especially nice when we are out gardening or doing yard work when we are covered in dirt!
WHY BUY THIS UNIT?
This is a great choice – so good in fact I can only come up with positive things to say about it – I cannot come up with a single complaint!
1. CanStor® Dispenser
• This is one of my favorite things in the Danby DCR34 Compact Refrigerator!! The CanStor Dispenser is an in door storage unit which holds up to eight 12 oz. cans. They stack one onto of another and are dispensed down on the bottom and then the next can drops down. Next to it there is another storage area that holds 2 liter bottles.
2. Push-Button Defrost
• A push button defrost – How cool is that? I have had regular sized refrigerators that I would have LOVED this feature! Having it in a compact one is a great bonus!
3. Freezer Compartment
• The freezer department is small but since we only use it for ice cubes, the size is fine. We keep 4 ice cube trays in it at a time.
4. Half shelf
• This is great – it is a smaller (1/2 size) shelf that allows you to store smaller items (long enough for pop cans stored on side) and still allows taller items to be stored in front of it. I wish I had one of these in my regular fridge, we always have more juice in it than shelves and one bottle gets put on its side which can spill – and often does! There are also 2 regular, adjustable shelves.
5. Integrated Handle
• The handle blends right into the fridge – it is up on the top and indented. It is easy to open and the great thing it means there is no handle to get broken off.
This and That
• Width: 17-11/16″
• Depth: 18-1/2″
• Height: 32-11/16″
• One year Parts and Labor warranty
• Available in Black or White
• Danby DCR34 Compact Refrigerator has an estimated yearly operating cost of $26.00.
• 2 Ice Cube and Drip Trays are included
• 3.2 cu. ft total volume
• Amperage Rating – 1.01 Amp.
I am surprised at how much use the Danby DCR34 Compact Refrigerator gets at our house. Granted, living on the water puts us outside more than when we lived in the city but I am sure it would be handy in any type dwelling. It even has an area for eggs!
It is big enough that we can store 8 cans of pop on the door, two liter bottles, more cans on the half shelf, boxes of juice and the larger bottles and still have room for fresh fruit. We have the recycle bin for the cans and boxes near by so even the clean up is fast and easy. I also like the fact you can have the door open from either the left or right side – a bonus for us lefties!
The Danby DCR34 Compact Refrigerator would be a great addition to any dorm, office, family room or like ours, on an outside deck! I am giving it 5 stars!”
