Before the 1920’s a lot of inventor’s had made contributions to the effort to produce a cooling machine among them Ibn Sina who in the 11th century produced the first version of a refrigerating coil but was never used in a compact way. William Cullen made a demonstration of refrigeration in 1748 in glasgow university but this method was never developed into a machine until 1805 when Oliver Evans made a vapour cooled unit. Many machines were built and tried but mainly on an industrial scale. A few household machines appeared between 1985 and 1927 but were very expensive and unreliable with only the wealthy being able to afford them. A compact type machine did’nt appearing until 1922 when Carl Munters and Baltzar Platen made this possible by creating the first absorption cooler in sweden while still students.
Until refrigerators were available many hillsides were covered in icehouses which remained cool for much of the year being packed with snow in the winter. Placing food and drink in running streams was another way to help lengthen the life of food products. Most domestic coolers were a simple icebox which was packed with ice to cool it and as it melted it would be replaced with fresh ice. The big downside to this was that the ice had to be paid for making it impractical for some poor families.

General electric produced the first refrigerator that was widely used with more than 1 million of them being manufactured from 1927. These General Electric Refrigerators had a compressor on top encased in a decorative finish whereas all future models had the compressor located at the foot of the machine. The refrigerant used in these was toxic and inflammable and is today completely banned from being used.
Nowadays modern appliances come in many shapes with a host of companies having large ranges of refrigerator models like the Counter Depth Refrigerator, Under Counter Refrigerator, Bottom Freezer Refrigerators, French Door Refrigerators plus many more variations.
